This was on the back of the latest research unveiled from University of Pennsylvania showing the discovery of PGD2. This is a prostaglandin type molecule that inhibited hair growth in mice. Researchers said they hoped the development or discovery of a compound that suppressed PGD2 would lead to a potential treatment for hair loss. See our hair transplant blog about this.

Our own work with University of Bradford on prostaglandin hair stimulating research is awaiting publication in a peer reviewed journal. This is the same medication that stimulates eyelash hair growth. Watch this space!

In the background behind Dr Farjo is Salford Quays, the beautiful setting for Media City and the new home of the BBC. In fact, HM The Queen and HRH Prince Philip officially opened the site the day after this interview!

On March 22, 2012 BBC Radio Surrey interviewed Dr Bessam Farjo about men’s hair loss and hair transplant surgery.
The interest was triggered by the news that Australian singer/actor Jason Donovan had revealed to Piers Morgan on ITV that he has had hair transplant surgery.

The day started with an inpirational and entertaining talk from our featured guest, Stephen Parry. Steve is a former Great Britain Olympic butterfly swimmer and current BBC sports presenter, and in fact brought home a bronze medal in the 200 metres from the Athens Olympic Games in 2004.

Dr Bessam Farjo followed presenting a trip down memory lane reminding long serving staff and demonstrating to new ones of the numerous achievements and accolades attributed to us. Other presentations followed emphasising our core values and principles and why Farjo continues to be at the top of the game.

Other activities involving all staff followed which will help shape our future plans. Ultimately, we strive to not only continue our good work but if possible improve further our patients’ journey through solving their hair loss concerns

Today’s Mail on Sunday Review on health section features an full page article on hair loss in post-menopausal women. The journalist, Alice Smellie, led with a case study who decided to have a hair weave as the answer to her baldness.

Alice had extensive discussions with Dr Bessam Farjo on this issue for the last few months actually since meeting both Drs Farjo at a press conference for the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons in Birmingham.

BHANG is the brainchild of Dr Paul Farrant, Consultant Dermatologist at Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals Trust. It is mainly intended for the continued research, education and training of dermatologists (skin specialist doctors) of all levels as well other medical doctors with a specific interest in hair and nail disorders. The day’s scientific program was put together by Dr Iaisha Ali, Consultant Dermatologist at Hammersmith & Charing Cross Hospitals.

In May, Dr Bessam Farjo will again give a talk for the group, but this time in Brighton for trainee dermatologists.

This meeting was organised by the International Academy of Cosmetic Dermatology and was held at the Cancun Center for Conventions & Exhibitions. Dr Farjo co-chaired the session and he talked about hair transplant surgery in the crown area as well as hair transplantation in women.
